I'm new to the Intercept and love it, except the Data Connection is lost frequently.  Plus, the bars on the signal strength go from almost full to nothing without changing the location of the phone.  Maybe it's just a coincidence, but completely powering the phone down  and back up seems to cure it.  I live in the Boston area and use Virgin Mobile.  Does this sound like a hardware or software issue?

I live in the Boston area as well and I have not had the bar thing happen I sometimes loose a bar o two but nothing major, but my browser and market apps have not been able to get data through yet all other apps have. Where in Boston do you live? You could be in one of those dead spots....

I work in Allston.  Live in Lynn.  I've also had numerous problems in stores while trying to check prices.  Today, even taking out the the battery did not help.  Could not get the Navigation app to work b/c not Data Connection.  Seems like it's time to contact VM.  I've read on some Sprint forums that doing something on their end can sometimes help.  I hope so.

I just got off the phone with VM they said the issue (at least mine; but yours seems similar) is known and common with the Intercept, they said they are working on it and they are creating tickets for those affected, I suggest calling them and having them do this, they said it would take 2-3 days for a resolution and notification.

I actually tried that the other day.  But none of my guesses for a PIN seemed to work.  I kind of angrily hng up in frustration.  I then tried the website.  When I said I forgot the password, it prompted me with security answers like pet names.  None of those worked either.  I wonder if my account was between monthly top offs.  I got a text saying my new month started.  But thanks for the advice.  Eventually, I will call again.

This happens to me quite frequently while I'm working at my desk. I finally got frustrated and hooked the phone up to my home wifi. This solved the issue (and holy cow are my connection speeds faster!).

I don't seem to have the problem when I'm out and about away from home. This leads me to believe that it's merely a connection issue due to where I live (near a military base).

The SpeedTest.net app is also amazing for troubleshooting.  Wink

I work in the downtown area of Boston and always lose my
data connection at Haymarket Station.  But as soon as I
leave the general area it returns.

Despite the coverage map saying otherwise, there are always
going to be spots where the service suffers.  While the device
may attribute to the loss, I can't truthfully say that the issue
is a deal breaker for the device.

I'm still inclined to say I'm having hardware problems.  As I view this page and not even touch the phone, the bars go from none almost full.  Virgin gave instructions to reset the phone.  It was supposed to cyclcle off and on by itself.  It never did.  They sent a text saying it was now fixed and to take the batterry out and put it back.  When I called to say it did nothing, they chuckled saying I was supposed to leave it out for 4hrs.  The text never said that. Now I constantly need to cycle airplane mode to get a data connection.  Very frustrating

I had this problem, and found that the data connection loss seems to be in more than one brand of Samsung phone w Andoid OS. I also got the fix-in-abox reply from VW that they are working on it, try powering down and removing the battery etc etc. I found this other solution--while it's stil a minor pain it's quick and easy, and works every time. You go to Settings--Wireless and networks--then enable Airplane Mode (it drops you off VW network completely)...close settings and get back to home screen. Then go back in and disable Airplane Mode. You will hear the tone that you are back in network. Bing. Data connection restored! It's almost as if there is a battery-saving function that won't allow the phone to "wake up" and re-establish data connection.

Yeah, I tried Airplane Mode.  It works sometimes.  Even powering the phone down does not always solve my woes.  Maybe I've got a bum phone.

Resetting the phone helped a lot. I had the same problems. Now it's working like I was expecting it to out of the box, but didn't until I reset it. Make sure you back up what you care about to the SD card. I also backed it up to my laptop. Go to Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset.

Looks like the Ericsson trucks I have seen in this part of the state mean they have been working on Sprint's network..maybe that's just a coincidence....but I have had no data failures in the last 24 hours. So yay to that...and the page load times seem to be quicker.

I suggest the Fast Reboot app to power down the phone instead of a turning it off and on again. It works fairly well to restore the data connection should it be lost.

 Cool

Day 5 now I believe since I last had a data failure...this to me would strongly lend to the theory that the problem isn't the phone but the network (Virgin/Sprint)..so double-yays to them fixing that issue. Anyone else find that the data faliure is corrected??
