Why does my phone keep telling me that I am low on storage and that my text message memory is full?? I deleted all my text messages and I cleaned out all the caches in my phone. I checked the storage on my SD card and it tells me I have plenty of storage left. I am at a loss. I have reset the phone. 3-4 different times. What is going on?? I am ready to give up on this phone. My Lg rumor touch was way better than this.

It is talking about phone internal memory. The SD Card has nothing to do with it. Try to remove some applications (and if you're on Sprint 2.2 Froyo), moving some apps to SD to free up internal storage. You should keep at least 20mb of phone storage free, less than that and it dumps texts and throws errors.
If you're on VM, you'll need to wait until this spring to get the 2.2 Froyo update, and you'll just have to keep a minimal amount of applications.

I have the same problem. I think there must be a solution or a bug here.

When you do the math, divide 20mb free by the maximum SMS message size (160 bytes) and you have enough storage remaining for 125,000 text messages.

Why does the message app require this much FREE storage for a 160 character message?

What gives? Even at 1% efficiency (!) there's room for 1250 messages here.

I wish I knew, I didn't design the system. This seems to be an issue with Android in general (and can be found in the highest numbers on forums of the smallest memory phones). I will guess it is to allow the OS some room to "breath". Even desktop OS's freak out when the HDD space is too low.

So I just downloaded an app, and I knew my phone was close to it's internal storage limit. So after downloading the app, i moved it to my SD card, but it's somehow still taking up internal storage, causing the phone not to receive text messages. How is that possible, how can it take up internal space if it's moved to the SD card?

Apps moved to the SD card still have to reside on the phone. For instance, Angry Birds is now up to nearly 17mb in size. Will use about 2mb of internal phone memory. If you are that close, you really should remove some other apps and keep your free space above 10mb (closer to 20mb for optimal usage).

If you are looking at the app you downloaded, and it says "move to phone", the size listed is what is still stored locally.

Well, that explains it. That blows. Thanks so much, that's good to know. I do have some apps that i can get rid of, but they are on my SD card so I didn't think they were hurting anything, but apparently they are, so i'll remove those too.
