mute the phone volume and the shutter sound is off....as far as camera apps there are quite a few, i personally have only used camera zoom fx just for the effects but not as my everyday use app.....search the marketplace for "camera" and start trying out the apps

i dont think any of the apps offer a solution to your initial question of muting the shutter sound though and i dont think anyone has found the audio file to replace it with one maybe muted through adb

I think there is a new law on the books that cameras must make the shutter sound.  That way people know if their picture is being taken without them knowing it.

if you use the volume rocker switch and mute the phone it also mutes the camera sound so thats not the case.....we just need to be able to find the audio file and create a file with no actual sound

Here's the easy workaround.  Get a silent toggle widget.  Put it and a camera shortcut side by side on one of your homescreens.  Hit the silent toggle, then hit the camera shortcut.

I heard about that too years ago. People were snapping pictures in dressing rooms and bathrooms so they wanted all camera phones to always make a shutter sound.

The main reason I use my phones camera is to take pictures of my pets when I'm bored and they're doing something funny. Or if they're sleeping in a weird way. The shutter sound them wakes them up :-\ so I have to make sure I get one good one.

I thought you were joking, but sadly your not  :(

Camera Phone Predator Alert Act

Requires any mobile phone containing a digital camera to sound a tone whenever a photograph is taken with the camera's phone. Prohibits such a phone from being equipped with a means of disabling or silencing the tone. Treats the requirement as a consumer product safety standard and requires enforcement by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

I like Z's idea, that's easier than what I do.  I put the phone on vibrate and that turns off the camera click yet I'm still alerted if someone is trying to call me.  Since both of these are a means of disabling or silencing the tone, then our Intercepts would be in violation of that bill.

I understand they are trying to prevent some from taking up-skirt and down-blouse pics, but pervs will find another way to get these pics on my phone.  ;D

I agree. There are always other ways. There are plenty of cameras and tiny camcorders that can be completely silent and take much higher resolution pictures. If someone really wanted to I'm sure those would be preferred methods. That's why I'm not too sure it's actually a law. I just remember hearing a lot of talk about it.

here is a quick write up:

must have root....then download connectbot

open connectbot, choose any username
type "su" and press enter....the "$" will turn into a "#"
type "mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/stl5 /system"
type "cd /system/media/audio/ui/"
type "cat camera_click.ogg > /sdcard/camera_click.ogg"
type "rm camera_click.ogg "
type "mount -t rfs -o remount,ro /dev/stl5 /system"
type "exit"
type "exit"
then click home and try out the camera there should be no shutter sound.....

now to find the auto focus sound

thanks to http://androidcommunity.com/forums/303501-post8.html

and cnstarz @ sdx for the connectbot commands
