Hello, I'm a new Intercept user who's still adjusting to Android after being stuck with an old flip phone for years. I'm using TasKiller Free as suggested by a friend, but I've been hearing a lot of mixed things about these task killer apps. Some people seem to say they're vital, while others live without them just fine. As far as maxing battery life goes, should I bother with Taskiller or doesn't it make a huge difference. Just curious to see what everyone's opinion is. I can't decide whether to keep it or not.

I've heard they only do damage over time because Android apps are designed to shut down on their own (properly) after so much time of not being in use and killing these apps make the phone work harder to recover them next time they're loaded, resulting in less battery life in the long run.

But I've also heard others who live by them to kill apps running the background that they don't want running.

Personally I don't use them. If there's an app that I don't want running in the background that doesn't shut itself down when inactive, i just uninstall it because I obviously don't need it that much. I used to use ATK on my Moment but after a few weeks of not noticing any difference I stopped worried it WOULD do damage over time.

My wife has the Intercept and her battery life is amazing compared to my Moment. I'll come home sometimes at 15% if I didn't charge it at all during work (and if I played around with it a lot) and she'll come home with around 50%. She doesn't use any kind of task killer.

I'd so go ahead a try it for a little bit and try to pay really close attention to your battery life and phones response time to see if it made any difference. If not I don't think it would be worth keeping.

Thanks for the reply. I have since switched to advanced task killer. For now I think i'll stick with it. I don't notice a huge difference when not killing tasks and if they are designed to close automatically then I may not need atk  after all.

On second thought, I uninstalled it. If I feel like my battery is draining too fast or my phone is running too slow, I'll reinstall...

I agree with *Do not use* camp.  In essence, if the
OS designers thought a Task Killer was needed, it would
have been added to the code from the get go.

Froyo 2.2 has a task killer built right into the Task Manager, so they obviously can't be that bad.

I think in that case SkullDragon, the OS designers realize that the
Market Place doesn't really have the Oversight and Quality Control
that say Apple imposes on any and all apps that get posted for
sale on iTunes.

Having said that, access to kill tasks has always been available
within the Android OS itself.  But, if 2.2 allows you to one touch
kill something - They must have anticiapted that some poorly
coded (unstable) app might hijack system resources and be
difficult to close.

I am guessing here.  My VM Intercept hasn't been upgraded
yet.  So, I'm not speaking from any real experience.  But maybe
someone that has upgraded would care to jump in and provide
more insight.  Sorry if I'm off base here in either case.

I read on some forum to not use Taks Killers. One might acidentally kill System Apps. Instead use Apps that show you what is running and close those Apps gracefully. Closing Apps gracefully, frees up memory and other resources in use by the App. I use Go Launcher Ex which is totally free and awesome App.

In addition, I use Android Assistant. It allows me to monitor my CPU, Memory, Apps. It performs total 12 functions and one of them is to clean cache and data to free up memory. That makes phone run faster.

I MUST use my task manager all the time to stop things. Everything I do just keeps running. I can not switch from one task to another with out them just piling up and slowing me down.  Things I haven't been doing for like 20 minutes are still running.  Am I damaging my phone?  Are my tasks not stopping appropriately on their own?  Should I back out of tasks as opposed to pressing the home key?
