why do i sometimes get a red battery icon when plugging in to charge?

This has happened to me a few times while trying to plug in the USB cable
into the device via my PC.  Now, I usually like to try to answer questions
as completely as possible, but truth be told - I have yet to find one post
on various forums and from the Samsung official site directly that gives
me a clear cut answer.

Here is the official answer provided during my research:

-------------------------
Thank you for sending an inquiry.

This issue is one that is best helped through calling our Customer Support Center, as they can help you troubleshoot this issue in a more timely manner than we could through forum correspondence.

At your earliest convenience, please call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number 1-888-987-4357, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Central Standard Time.

Thank you for your continued interest in Samsung products
-------------------------

Now, how I have dealt with this issue is to unplug the device from the
USB Cable.  Power down the device.  And then reconnect your Intercept
with its USB Cable.  It should charge normally.

I apologize that my answer was not much help.  If others have some
insight, I welcome their input and assistance in actually getting this'
inquiry resolved.

Thanks!  The same thing happened to me-battery was down to about 25% charge but when I plugged the charger in the battery icon changed to a red, blinking outline.  I tried my car charger-same result.

After reading this thread I removed, then replaced the battery and plugged the charges in-it's charging now.  So glad it's not the phone.  Thanks Again!
