Well guys... What happened was I researched rooting my phone and found a link to one that had some pretty strong backing from people that said they had successfully used this root software so I decided to give it a try. I went to the link and downloaded it. It was a "one click root/unroot." After I downloaded it I unzipped it to a folder and double clicked the icon labeled "start root" which failed the first two times. It said that it may fail several times but you have to keep doing it and eventually it will work.

Eventually, it did work and said everything was completed without any errors. At first everything worked fine though I didn't try to do anything other than try to put live wallpapers on my phone which I ended up not being able to do because when I would restart the phone with volume down + send + power button it would only give me 4 different options which were reboot the phone, wipe the phone, wipe the cache and then another one that said update sd.zip which just gave me an error if I tried to do it so I know that my problem has nothing to do with getting live wallpapers because nothing ever ended up getting installed.

After I gave up on that, I set the phone down and came back to it an hour later and the phone had been rebooted. I didn't do it so I figured hmm thats odd but whatever. Afer that it kept freezing up on me and giving me alot of trouble. I couldn't access things without it wanting to freeze and reboot itself. Sometime I could get into one or two things successfully but very very slowly. Its like it just took a major crap on me. So, I ended up trying to do the unroot and it wouldn't work for me. I don't know why but every time I would try, it would look like it was going to work but it wouldn't finish the process. Then, after I unplugged my usb cord from the phone it would go through the rest of the process and say it failed (obviously because there was no usb cord plugged into the phone anymore. I could leave it in for an hour and it would not finish the unroot but the second I unplugged the phone, it would start trying the rest of the unroot process on my computer.

After trying a few other things I decided it was best for me to just eat the consequences and reboot to wipe the phone which I did. After I did that, I STILL had the same stupid issues which made me real mad so I figured it didn't matter because the phone was useless if it wasn't correctly so I decided to format the sd card and wipe everything from it as well. After I did that, the phone started working alot better but then started doing the same s*** as before but just not AS often. It still does it alot and makes me real mad. It needs to be fixed because I recently got the update to Android 2.2 Froyo on my phone (its the virgin mobile version so I JUST got it) and the phone was running spectacularly with no problems and then I ran into this.

I have no idea waht to do at this point and I really need some help because I cannot deal with this crap the way it is much longer. If I can get some insight on how I may be able to fix this or get it back to where everything is erased off of the phone, that would be great. I thought when I erased everything from the SD card that was what I did but I guess not. I don't mind rooting the phone again so long as it works without all of these issues but my biggest fear is that I do not want to lose Android 2.2 Froyo and be stuck back on 2.1. Froyo runs so much better and I want to keep it,

The one click root program/software that I used was a link and I downloaded it. The link is as follows: http://samsunginterceptforum.com/sprint-intercept-all-things-root/241357-one-click-root-froyo-intercept-windows.html  You can look there to see what it is and see that people were talking about it as if it worked just fine so I don't know why it screwed mine up. Some of the file names in there are joeykrim-root.sh, jk-su and playlogo which I saw other people used in their root software too. I don't know if this helps or not but if theres anything you may need to know that I did not list, please let me know because I really need some help on this one. If anyone has anything that might help with this let me know.

Thanks in advance to anyone that has any insight into this or can help me in any way what-so-ever to get me back to where I need to be as far as having a smooth running Intercept again :P

I used the same method, the .bat files just automate the process. Worked just fine for me... Was great if ALL you wanted to do was remove the sprint or vm garbage or use "root only" programs.

Your other issue of not being able to install the live wallpapers is completely unrelated.
What you need to do is install a custom recovery via the samsung loader from a PC. Look up directions on how to install "CM01" on the intercept, it will all be spelled out. Once that's installed, it's easy as anything to add files via the recovery screen.

As always, read ALL the directions before you start, and only proceed once you feel you understand them 100%. Ask questions if there is something you don't understand about a particular step of the rooting process :)
It can be a scary journey, but the end results are well worth the time and effort.

So, CM01 is a custom recovery tool for intercept and once I learn how to do that it will recover the phone back to factory settings and also allow me to keep froyo on my phone??

Also, I know that the live wallpapers has nothing to do with the phone and is an unrelated issue but I wanted to list step by step what I did to the phone in case there was some microscopic chance that something I did with that had something to do with why the phone was acting up :P.

And yeah I fully understood the whole one click root process and read up on it for a day before I decided to go with it but still had the issue. So, you are saying that you used the same thing and had no issues at all? What could have gone wrong for me? Did you do anything different than what I did? I mean the instructions were very simple to follow so I thought I did everything exactly as I should have. I am going to read up on CM01 now and educate myself with what it is before I proceed any further. By the way... Ty for the info. I really appreciate it.

Since I've posted this I downloaded the CM01.tar file and SWupdate. I ran into an issue... I stuck the CM01.tar into the correct location inside the Binary folder. I also removed what was previously in that Binary folder. I saw that I needed to do that or else the phone could brick. Is that true? The reason that I ask is because I clicked "start software download" and it tells me it cannot open bin file and will not allow me to do anything.

My questions are as follows:

1. Is CM01.tar the only file that is supposed to be in the folder?
2. If not, what else should I have in the folder? (can you provide me a link?)

I understand that I am not very knowledgable with these things but I follow directions very well and I know that I did everything correctly when I did the one click root method. As it stands I have a phone that has been wiped and an sd card that has also been wiped/formatted. I still have Froyo on the phone which is functioning better than it did after I started having those issues but it is still a mess and not nearly as fast as its supposed to be and randomly freezes up and reboots. Even when the phone is not rooted now it is doing that and it didn't before so I know that it has everything to do with rooting the phone. According to root checker it is showing that the phone is still rooted and it  is also showing that busybox is installed. When I boot the phone up into recovery mode it still looks the exact same as the original and I have no other options...

My last resort is to either get someone that knows exactly what I can do to either get the phone wiped clean of everything except Android 2.2 Froyo and whatever comes with it... I've already lost everything on the SDCard and everything else. That or I want to be able to successfully root the phone or make sure that mine is properly rooted. I am sorry to ask but...

If ANYONE has Skype or AIM or anything like that and is willing to help me directly, I would be most appreciative. Trust me when I say that I am a very fast learner and I also know my way around a computer but I just haven't been very hands on with cellphones considering that I just got my first cellphone since my old nextel piece of s*** phone, lol. So you can imagine how behind I am. But listen... If anyone is willing to help me with this I can guarantee you I won't be a big pain in the rectum and I will be able to download everything and follow your instructions to a T to get it done as quick as possible.

If anyone is willing to do this just post here and let me know and I will PM you my username for whatever program it is that you prefer to use. My preference is skype only because we can voice chat and get it done a million times faster. I can also use teamspeak or ventrilo if you prfer a voicechat program. Anyone just let me know if this is a possibility.

Otherwise, any information would really be helpful so I can get this fixed. I JUST WANT MY PHONE BACK!!! (with Froyo 2.2 that is  Wink)

I too am having this same problem. Im having the same problems that you are having EXACTLY. I downloaded and use the same one click root that you did and it worked fine for a few minutes then the phone got very very slow and rebooted randomly and also started to freeze up when I would try to do something to the point that I would have to take the battery out of the back of it and put it back in and boot the phone back up.

After "rooting" the phone and trying to boot it into recovery mode it looks like the same recovery from standard froyo android 2.2 and I don't see anything that would signify being able to do anything that I see others can do with rooted phones/ Like they are able to go in and browse files and select files to run or install. I saw a guy that was able to go into recovery mode and select and browse files that were on his phone to boot up a file he put on there to enable him to have live wallpapers. Mine did not have any of these options. Mine has the same ones that el_h3fe described his has.

Lastly, I also downloaded SWUpdate and CM01.tar and I went to the binary folder of the SWUpdate and removed what was in it. The file that was inside it was labeled "SPH-M900_MR2_DE03_REL_1.tar.md5". I removed that file and put CM01.tar inside and tried to run SWUpdate and I got the whole way through until it came time to install the updated where it says click here to being update or whatever it says and then BOOM cannot open bin file and will not let me proceed. I don't know how I managed to get in the same boat as el_h3fe exactly and I am not sure if there are other people who have had our same issue bt any help surely would be appreciated.

My phone is very important to me and I cannot afford to buy a whole new phone right now so I would really like to get this one fixed. Hell, I would be willing to pay someone that was willing to take the time and post a step by step on how we can fix this issue (not just telling us what we need to do and telling us to go search it somewhere. Every time I do this I get no closer to an answer or get even more confused because no one elses issue directly relates to mine. They are usually something that has to do with the files I am looking for but it isnt the same situation so it doesn't help. That or the link is broken and doesn't work. No offense to anyone is intended. I know that people have replied with info and I am very very greatful to you for it I just need something exact to ensure I dont screw my phone up because I cant afford to mess it up). or... I have Skype and Ventrilo and Teamspeak as well (I'm a gamer what can I say) as yahoo messenger and AIM. I'll download any other program if need be but I am also willing to use one of these programs to fix it as well so that we can communicate quicker to get a resolution. Is anyone up for the challenge? Just let me know!

Did you do the SWupdate patch file too??

And YES, leaving the origional file in there will try to install the samsung moment (sph-m900) firmware on your intercept (sph-m910), which WILL brick it.

A Step by step for using the swupdate to install cm01 recovery.

1: Install "Samsung Moment Updater"
2: Remove ALL files from the "C:\Program Files\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary" folder.
3: Install "SDX Samsung Updater Patch"
4: Copy cmo1.tar into the folder you emptied before "C:\Program Files\Samsung Electronics\SWUPgrade\Models\Binary"
5: Run SWUpgrade shortcut that should now be on your desktop. Follow on screen prompts directly. This will ensure that the proper loader drivers are in place.
5.1: If SWUpgrade is looking for drivers, do an internet search for "Samsung MCCI Driver 4.24" and install these, Return to step 5. Otherwise continue to step 6.
6: Let SWUpgrade install the file. This should only take about 30seconds.
7: Pull battery out while phone is rebooting. DO NOT LET IT LOAD THE OS FULLY.
8: Go back into recovery mode (down, end, camera). You should now have many more options.
9: From recovery, you can now choose "exit recovery" and reboot the phone, or continue to step 10
10: If you want to try different roms, themes, kernels, etc... Put them anywhere on your SD card (I made a roms folder), and they can be installed via the custom recovery, you should not need the SWUpgrade program again unless you want to wipe back to 100% stock (recovery, kernel, os) using the official factory OS .tar file (full name unknown). This is only really useful if you need to take it back for servicing and don't want any trace of modifications.

I really appreciate you posting everything and I was under the impression that the "cannot open bin file" was me not having installed the SWupdate patch file which I went and downloaded and at the bottom right of my screen is said com5 instead of com4. However, when I got to the end when it was time to click start sowftware download, it still says cannot open bin file. I am so mad because this is the ONLY thing that is keeping me from continuing and getting this taken care of.

I know you have done alot already but if you or anyone else knows how I may be able to troubleshoot this, it would be great. It sucks so bad that this is the only thing keeping me from being able to get this fixed. Feels like I am so close but its just out of reach, lol. Thanks alot!

the com# doesn't matter.

I would try downloading the CM01.tar again. You may have just gotten a bad download. Try to get it from a different source if possible. If you have any antivirus programs running on your computer, it may help to pause them while you do this. Maybe uninstall all the samsung files and start over from scratch, just in case something isn't installed correctly. Not sure if the patch has to be applied before the program is ever opened, I always just did it right off.

I deleted and reinstalled everything doing the updater first then the SWupgrade and I deleted and redownloaded CM01.tar. However, I did not download CM01.tar from another source because every link that I found to download the file was actually the same original posting/link/uploaded file. The one that I have used is the one at this link: http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/inxane/intercept/CM01.tar

I did a search with a search engine and found a few other links that at first glance looked to be different sources but ended up either taking me back to the exact same link or same file uploaded by the same person. I wonder... Do you have an alternative source where I can download the file? Its a long shot to say that'll fix the issue but its worth a try in my opinion.

****By the way... Is there another way to do this? I keep seeing people talk about using inxane recovery or something like then instead of this when they are having difficulty getting CM01.tar to work. Many people have tried it with SWupgrade apparently. Does this have anything to do with my issue and could it fix it back to original 2.2?

CM01 IS Inxane's recovery. You may see inxane recovery v1.4, which is just what he called it before it was renamed to cm01 :)

Not sure why it's not working for you. Do you have a download accelerator installed on your computer? Try downloading it from another computer. I'm wondering if Inxane changed something that broke it :(

Send me a PM and I will send you a link to the file in my public dropbox account. I had downloaded it from the same link you posted, but I have it working on my computer. There is a lot of documentation about the cm01 recovery program on ubuntdroid.com (they make a replacement rom for the Intercept, although my experience with it has been less than stellar, new version coming soon aparently) since it's a requirement of getting any custom roms to work in the first place.

Oh, I didn't know it was the same thing... No, I do not havea ny download excelerator antivirus programs or ANYTHING that could be causing it not to open. Also.. I thought to try it on another computer and I have tried it on 3 other computers and keep getting a usb error saying my "unknown device" had an error and windows is unable to detect it so it doesn't work. The only PC it works on is mine. I have no idea why I lucked out on my PC and three others give me that error even after I install the USB drivers. I have one more computer left to try it on but for some reason I just don't see how it would be my computer thats causing it. I will send you the PM in just a sec.

In the mean time... Anyone else that has any insight into this issue can be my guest to post what I may be able to do to fix this  Wink

OMG I finally got it to work. I was having so much trouble trying to get the usb drivers to work on another computer and I finally was able to find a computer to get the drivers to work on. I am not sure if it was the computer that I used that made the difference or the links that you gave to me, ratsttam. But, I do know that it did work!!!

Now... I am left with a question (as if I had the right to ask any additional questions lol). I was able to boot the phone back up insto restore mode and I have SEVERAL new options that revolve around wiping and formatting the phone etc... Which of these options would allow me to wipe the phone but keep 2.2? IS this even possible to do? Is there a way for me to save contacts and froyo and wipe everything else? I just dont want to do anything that would brick the phone. If you need me to post the options it gives me, I'd be happy to. Just let me know. Also... I rooted the phone with that one click root crap but I don't think I want to keep that on the phone seeing as it screwed it up in the first place...

Is there any way for me to root the phone with something else that isn't temporary? Like... A permanent root? Unless of course I flash it and reset again. One last question... People are able to boot up into restore mode each time where as I have to go through the SWUpgrade with CM01.tar then stopping it when it boots up and booting up into restore mode.

I know alot of these are dumb questions but I could definitely use some answers to them. I'm learning..  SLOWLY lol.

Here's the story of permanent rooting my VM intercept:

http://home.comcast.net/~tomhorsley/hardware/intercept/root2.2.html

That also contains my discovery that talking to the phone via
usb works on vastly more computers if you use a powered
usb hub. The phone insisting on charging itself seems to draw
too much power for an awful lot of usb ports on different
computers.

Haha. you DO have the right to ask additional questions. Afterall THAT is what we're here for.

To leave the OS you wipe the "data" partition. Your contacts should be synched up to your gmail account, and will come back down when you log back into.

I didn't care too much for the one click root methods (not sure which you used), but what I would recommend, is to install the zip file for "final_crap" which is a rooted kernel. I sent that file, Others PM me and I'll link you up too. Use the option in recovery to "install zip from sd", find it on your card (you did put it there right?) and install it. I found much better battery life, since it also undervolts the processor a little bit.

oh, thats great. I will definitely do that. Id id not originally download that but I will go ahead and do that after I wipe the data partition. and yes, I will install it on the SDcard and follow those direction to access and install it. Thanks again for the info and I will update on whether or not I am successful and also if I have any ADDITIONAL questions which I have the right so ask  Grin

Thanks again!
