Brightness.apk and .odex
---Same thing.  Killed it and no differences so, boom, gone.

I wonder if this is the thing that keeps the screen dim when the battery gets really low?  I can see the reasoning behind it, but with the battery meter being so foobar'd, it's more annoying than helpful!  If it is, It's sooo gone on mine!

Might also be the what controls the screen brightness in relation to ambient light.

Peeps, you made a good point so I did some more tests.

Brightness levels work.
Brightness widgets work.
Auto brightness level still functions.
Screen still dims when low batt is displayed. 15%.

There are other things that I continue to kill with Advanced Task Manager or, more so, ignore.  I ran the apk's in /system/app/ with an app called AndExplorer.  Works really well in seeing what those apps do or effect and made backing up a lot easier.

@ burst, good work with your tests. i find it SOOOO annoying not having a description about what each running apk/service is doing...

one of the items i WAS curious about were the im, i didn't know if it would still let im's come through (google im, text im)...  but it sounds like your test prove we cant mess with it...

Awww stop.

Just to clarify though. Im.apk is safe to remove. However, Improvider.apk is not.

Talk still works.
Sms and mms functional.

One more thing about the brightness apk...

Screen dims in Sprint Nav as normal.

Who loves the Bejeweled Demo???  Not I... along with a bunch of other crap that come pre loaded and NON-Uninstallable...

Someone had asked if there is any benefit to rooting, well, i think this could qualify.

<snip>

Well this bites, I tried using AndExlplorer to cut those listed apps and paste them on the sd card and it wouldn't let me move those apps.  I could copy and paste them, but couldn't cut and paste them.

My phone isn't rooted, but I thought I would try this anyway to save some space.

Except for the touch firmware. Easy to avoid, but not fixable if you make a mistake. I'm a do/win/mac user and linux isn't so hard to follow.

But ii think if youdo anything just use testmode to renove apps.

Or just wait till we have an easy flash file...won't be too long with this group.

The mod I read about the most is Cyanogenmod. I was looking at the screen shots and it looks interesting:  http://www.cyanogenmod.com/screenshots

I'll have to find a "rooting for dummies" guide with step-by-steps to see if it's something I can do.  On the wiki page linked from that site, I don't see the Intercept from the list so I wouldn't know exactly where to start:

I am replying to this thread instead of the persistant root..
I rooted again after my little incident the 2nd time (i can't help myself... it is an addiction to modify anything i have :) )...
The first 2nd time (the first time i rooted and removed the apps i believe it was Startup Auditor that caused my phone to boot loop)..
I then reflashed with ODIN back to stock..
Then rooted again and removed ALL the apps you have listed as Kill.. When i rebooted teh phone via adb reboot command the phone rebooted and then i went into a boot loop again (stuck on the android splash screen for 5 minutes)... I then flashed with ODIN again and booted teh phone to stock to make sure it still worked..
Rooted the phone again and deleted Amazon, bejeweled, MoxierMail, Nascar, NFL and weather... Rebooted the phone 3 times since and it seems to be stable so that is what i am leaving it out and not pushing it further.. Would be nice if you could image the system settings and reload it back to those settings instead of having to redo all the settings manually...

If you get that error, just type:
Quote
adb shell
su
mount -oremount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
