Hello

This 1 click root app is in the market now. I was wondering if it works with the Intercept?

I'm not a mason so I have no use for bricks right now.

I rooted (temp root) my Intercept with no problems at all. I rooted in order to use barnacle wifi legacy.

OK I just used z4root - Version 1.3 to temp root my VM samsung intercept. I copied Z4root to the SD card. Then I used ASTRO File Manager to unpack and install. Then I ran Z4 root temp (the temp will give you SU until you reboot), it took about a minute to root. Then I open Android Terminal Emulator and used the command SU and it gave me SU permissions.

I didn't remove anything, I wanted to resart and make sure every thing was OK.
It restartd fine. Then went to terminal and tried to SU, permission denied.

I goning to replace the VM "poweron.wav" and the shut down wav file next. This was the main reason for rooting. I don't think I'll mess with anything else for now.

z4root worked fine for my Virgin Mobile version. I did the temporary root; so far I haven't seen a reason to do the permanent root.

The only problem was that the z4root app itself was 20 megs after rooting, which kind of defeated the purpose of removing the cruft-apps.

But now the question is: Can anything give me temp root permissions on my newly updated VM 2.2 phone?  I don't really want to replace the kernel or junk like that, I just want root permissions so I can remount the /system partition and remove or rename crap. The temp root mode of z4root worked perfectly for that with 2.1, but the z4root exploit apparently no longer works on 2.2.

SDX-Developers Member kuroyoma has posted a very good link for - One Click Root And Unroot For Froyo Samsung Intercept from your Windows:

http://forum.sdx-developers.com/intercept-development-2-2/one-click-root-and-unroot-for-froyo-intercept-for-windows-(updated)/

This uses ADB, rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin exploit and su binary, and Busybox App.

Please read the above thread completely to understand and get answers for any questions that you have.

Easy Instructions:

Download the zip file to C:\ on your Windows PC

Unzip the file using Winzip or similar tool (Search on Google for Winzip downlaod)

It will extract in folder - InterceptFroyoRoot v0.2

Using Windows Explorer open C:\InterceptFroyoRoot v0.2 folder.

Do not click or double click on any of the .bat files yet.

Open all .sh files (one at a time in notepad ) and replace /dev/block/stl9 with /dev/block/stl5 and save .sh files. This is needed because to correct the mount path in Samsung Intercept is /dev/block/stl5 for /system.

To Root:

Turn on USB Debugging on your Samsung Intercept phone.

(Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging Check this option)

Connect your Samsung Intercept to USB port on your Windows PC.

From Windows Explorer, go to C:\InterceptFroyoRoot v0.2

double click on START_ROOT.bat

Wait and check the output on PC screen...

To Unroot:

Turn on USB Debugging on your Samsung Intercept phone.

(Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging Check this option)

Connect your Samsung Intercept to USB port on your Windows PC.

From Windows Explorer, go to C:\InterceptFroyoRoot v0.2

double click on START_UNROOT.bat

Wait and check the output on PC screen...

I know right? I'm too chicken to root my phone. I'll tinker with LUA code for wow addons and modify the crap out of my computer, but I won't root my phone lol.

well my phone wont connect to the computer

I finally got mine to work, but had to try 3 different computers before I found my oldest one that only has usb 1.1 world work. Something about usb 2.0 ports and the intercept seem to cause problems, possibly it is drawing too much power. I'm going to try with a powered hub when I can get hold of one to see if that works.

I did finally get root access though by running the batch file commands "by hand" (since the only computer that
would speak to the phone has fedora linux installed, not windows).

F.Y.I. I would not do a full root on the Intercept until 2.3 via OTA.  Until then I would just do a temp root.  But that's is just me.

Do you really expect there will ever be another update for the intercept? I'd imagine by the time sprint/vm gets around to it, they will figure the phone is too old to be worth updating.
