I've been reading that one way to help the battery to last longer is by turning off the data and voice call roaming. Does anyone here do this and if so do you see an improvement in battery life? I keep mine on but don't know if I need to. I have an everything data plan so I don't have any roaming charges anyway but what difference will I notice in my phone (other than battery life) by turning it off? Will I have to give it permission to use certain features or even make or receive a call if I'm in "roaming" mode? Thanks.

I beleive the biggest gain is had in turning off the GPS and uninstalling The Weather Channel.

Is there an app/widget that can give weather info without constantly needing access to gps? I'm going to remove the Weather Channel app if it will help battery life.

I'm using a different weather widget now. It gave the option to not use GPS and to just use the network or something and it still shows current weather and the forecast. Is that how the Weather Channel app was - giving the option to not use GPS but it would still work? I didn't really pay that much attention. Also, is there no way to actually delete the Weather Channel widgets and icon? I uninstalled it but those are still there.

 Grin

All things being equal, a CDMA phone consumes more power than a GSM phone. If battery life is important, you should consider using GSM as long as it has enough coverage.

Phone Radio is always searching for 3G signal if 3G Data is on. If your new smartphone is continuously searching for signal in an area with weak signal, the phone will work a lot harder and shorten battery life.

Press Home - Settings - About Phone - Battery Use - Cell standby , after touching Cell Standby you'll notice look for "Use details". Under User Details, you will find  the infamous "Time without a signal" value. If it is 50% or above 50% then the phone is consuming more battery while searching for 3G signal.

If your current location has no coverage, turn off the phone or switch it to Airplane / Flight mode.

If the 3G signal is weak, the battery will use more power to boost the signal. Consider disabling the phone's 3G feature and using the slower GPRS or EDGE instead.

Press power button until you get Power Options Menu
Select Flight mode

This will stop search for 3G signal and phone will not drain battery.

I also use Android Assistant 12 features. Under Tools tab there is Airplane mode toggle to turn on or off Airplane / Flight mode.

Other trick is to go to Home screen. Press Power/End Call button until one gets Phone options menu. Under Phone options menu is an option Flight mode.

Or Press

Home -> Settings -> Wirelees & networks -> Airplane mode

There are also a lot Apps available in Android Market for managing Airplane mode.

I've found that I don't really need a weather widget. I have my browsers home page set to my favorite local weather page. If I wanna see my local weather, I just tap on my browser app and there it is.  Wink

I do the same with my browser. For data control and battery life I use Juice defender! This free app does it all, I can set when it will automatically get data for my emails etc so the data is not on all the time. My battery lasts all day. Juice defender is one of the best aops available and many people don't know about it.

I was using Juice defender with good results then I read that the free app GREEN POWER FREE was even better so I'm using that now and yes it seems to work great so far!!!  My battery lasted yesterday  from 930am to 930PM and I still was at 40% more battery left when I put it on the charger for today. Still experimenting....

I don't use GREEN POWER FREE app for my WiFi, I control WiFi with the power widget. I use only the day settings (manage mobile network is checked)  here are my settings:
Screen off delay  5s
Data traffic threshold 1KB/s
Keep duing phone call is unchecked (havent tried it checked yet)

DAY MODE SETTINGS:
Wireless on:  1min
Wireless off:  15min (I'm sure at 30min you would even get better results)
Toggle if screen on is checked
Toggle if screen unlocked is checked
Toggle if power on  is checked

I like to listen to my local AM station with the screen off (radio.com) and the above threshold setting keeps the data on only when I'm using it with the screen off! Very cool!

So I have put the GREEN POWER FREE app on my phone and didn't notice any difference but I never tried the settings you're using so I will try them and see. So I'm wondering if the standard battery juice is like 1 day because I charge my battery every day, sometimes twice in a 24hr period. I think it's normal use. I'm not on the net constantly either. Also what Widget do you use to turn Wi-fi on and off? I used to have the quick option to turn it on with the notification drop down bar but since the 2.2 update I don't have it anymore.

Long day today, phone was on starting from 4:30am this morning. I used the web, emails, mp3 player for quite a long time. Its now 9:58pm and the battery is at 50%. So far I think that Green Power Free works.  To control the Wifi/ bluetooth/ gps/ and Screen brightness its easy with 1 widget. while on your home screen, press and hold the menu tab, you will see add to screen button, press that and then press widget then look for Power Control, press that and you will have a cool widget on your screen that will give you manual control of your Wifi, bluetooth, gps, and screen brightness. BTW, I am using go launcher ex   its a very improved launcher app for the android operating system. Many people are commenting about this app on other posts.....

Thanks for the advice. What is go launcher ex? Is that an internet browser? Even after the 2.2 update I've noticed the phone still runs slow at times. The biggest thing I've noticed is when I exit 2 go back 2 my home page it takes a long time 4 the icons to show up. Sometimes 10 seconds or more. I don't know why it does that. Do you get that? It doesn't happen all the time but enough to be annoying

What is go launcher ex?

It's a home launcher. Basically it decorates your desktop and adds a ton of nice features. It's free, and I recommend all of the basic Go apps by the Go Dev Team!

Go Launcher EX, Go SMS Pro, and Go ContactsSmile  Wink
