Can anyone tell me how to get the file to the root of the sd card?  May be a dumb q but...
I've put it in dropbox and so I have the file on the phone.  But when I press and hold, the menu that drops does not offer "sd card" as a location to move it to.  What am I doing wrong here? Tnx!

Read the comment that is 2 comments above yours.

It doesn't say "SD card" because it is already ON the SD card.
You can't save something to the internal memory I don't think.

This is a manual download of a LEGIT Virgin Mobile version of Froyo.

Very easy to do if you follow the steps. ANYONE CAN DO IT.

*Thanks to the VirginMobileUSA fb peeps.
Well, if I was able to do it, then it's true, _anyone_ can do it. Thanks tifferrr89!

Just wanted to report a successful manual update, thank you so much for posting the info here for us to follow. I was VERY afraid to do this, but I did, and it's wonderful.

Now I'm trying to figure out what exactly is new in the update. I like the task manager...very nice! But I'm trying to find that list that VM put up on FB about what is new in Froyo...

Great update, though!

Sure is.
Someone at sdx got the OTA update, extracted the file, and uploaded it.

This is it.

Got tired of waiting for the update from Virgin Mobile. Followed your easy to understand instrutions and I am now a happy Froyo user. Everything works great and just downloaded a new memo pad as it is not included in the update and a Wifi turn on/off button to simplify things.

Thanks Tiff!!

I upgraded using the zip file yesterday with no problem at all. Thanks to everyone for getting this out!

I used to use the old note pad too. Which one did you download? I don't see any like the one that came with 2.1.

There were a bunch of free memo downloads from the market. I installed Wizard Memo and it seems like a keeper to me.

Cool, thanks. Installed Wizard Memo and I think it pretty good, the voice input feature is cool.

i tried to manually update via recovery mode and got an error message about "assert failure" or something like that and it mentioned brightness.apk

is that because i temp rooted with z4root and removed some junk apks? do i have to put all those back now? why can't the update just copy them over.

also, will a factory reset fix this? and if so how do i back up my google map settings (i have addresses saved in it)?

It says in the post that the manual update process does not work if you have ever rooted your phone. Even if you unrooted.

The update doesn't delete anything except for the memos I believe.

 Grin

This is the best post ever. Great jobs assuring and helping all those held hostage by slow Virgin Mobile USA Froyo release!

Some people do not have computer. They only have Samsung Intercept. These people can open Browser on their phone and search in Google for:

facebook vm samsung intercept

Click on the first link in the Google search results.

You will go to Facebook page - VM Samsung Intercept

Click on Discussions on left on this Facebook page

Click on link - How To Update To VM Official Android 2.2 Froyo Release

In step 1, you will see link for the file. If you select it, the zip file will be downloaded to root of your SD card automatically.

You will need to rename the file on SD card to update.zip using My Files App on your phone.

Then follow steps 2 to 7 on Facebook page .

You need to explain in detail the actions you took after Temp root. If you used Temp root to remove some Apps or make any changes to the phone then you need to return your phone completely to Stock. In this case, you may want to go to page 13 of this post:

http://forum.sdx-developers.com/intercept-development-2-2/vm-froyo-official-update-zip/

Please post your questions if you want more specific answers. There are some great Development gurus who can provide you much more accurate info. If you do not have User Id and Password, then you will need to create one.

If you were using Temp root for running some Apps that need root but did not make any changes then yes, you can reboot the phone once and you will be ready to apply the update.zip file.

In any case, back up all your data before following any steps.
